Opportunity for Authors: SPE Polymers Joins OA Pricing Pilot

Wiley launched the Open Access Pricing Power Parity Pilot (OAPPPP) for researchers across Latin America to support equitable access.
Traditional publishing restricts research access through high subscription costs, while open access removes paywalls and promotes transparency and availability.
As a result, open access enables broader engagement with research, regardless of an individual’s income level or institutional affiliation.

Introducing the Pricing Power Parity Pilot
Wiley launched the Open Access Pricing Power Parity Pilot (OAPPPP) for researchers across Latin America to support equitable access. This initiative adjusts article processing charges (APCs) based on World Bank economic data according to each country’s purchasing power. Researchers in 33 countries—including Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean—will receive country-specific APC discounts for OA publishing. This model creates a fairer cost structure, ensuring that economic disparities do not block authors from publishing their work. The pilot runs for 12 months beginning in January 2025, with a mid-point review to assess impact and collect feedback. Once accepted for publication, eligible authors automatically receive the discount based on their institution’s country—no extra steps are required. This seamless process encourages participation and helps researchers focus on their work rather than financial limitations.
A Boost for SPE Polymers and Regional Research
This initiative directly benefits SPE Polymers, Wiley’s fully open access journal dedicated to advances in polymer science and engineering. By lowering publishing costs, the pilot encourages more submissions from Latin America and amplifies underrepresented voices in global research. As participation grows, SPE Polymers will expand its author diversity and strengthen its international reach in polymer innovation. New contributions from Latin America can highlight region-specific research and provide valuable insights for global scientific collaboration. As a result, the journal’s visibility, inclusivity, and scientific impact will continue to grow in meaningful ways.
Why Open Access Matters
Open access matters because it removes financial and geographic barriers, helping research reach a global audience without restriction. This model promotes collaboration, accelerates discovery, and ensures transparency through open data practices and reproducible results. Authors benefit from increased visibility, higher citation rates, and broader recognition of their contributions across academic and applied fields. Furthermore, open access supports early-career researchers and underfunded institutions by leveling the playing field in scholarly publishing.
Leading the Way in 2025
Wiley’s Pricing Power Parity Pilot is one example of how publishers can support a more inclusive and sustainable open research model. Through initiatives like this, SPE Polymers and the global research community are empowered to thrive in a world without knowledge barriers. By continuing to expand open access opportunities, we help build a more equitable, transparent, and impactful future for global science.
