Kistler North America Introduces Industry's Smallest Injection Molding Cavity Pressure Sensor

Kistler (www.kistler.com), a worldwide supplier of precision sensors, systems and instrumentation for the dynamic measurement of pressure, force, torque and acceleration, has announced the introduction of the Type 6184A, a miniature quartz mold cavity pressure sensor, expressly designed for high-precision pressure measurements most commonly found within height- and width-constrained, multi-cavity injection molding environments, such as thermoplastic medical, optical and electronics applications.

With the industry’s smallest front diameter measuring just 0.047 inches (1.2 millimeters) and with a sensitivity of 1.2 pC/bar, miniaturization of the Kistler Type 6184A allows for direct cavity pressure measurements of hard-to-reach areas of smaller mold inserts, with reliable operation in temperatures up to +200°C (+392°F).  The pressure sensor incorporates a high-quality quartz sensing element and a diaphragm-free design with a flat, machinable measuring front, allowing it to support mold cavity measurements of up to 2000 bar. The sensor is also available with Kistler’s own patented single-wire technology for ease of installation and elimination of costly cable repairs, as well as to ensure that electrical shielding is guaranteed by the mold.

Incorporation of a side exit for the integrated, repairable single-wire cable minimizes overall sensor height and prevents cable twisting, ensuring that the sensor can be effectively mounted, either radially or axially, directly into a mold insert or a slider. At the side, the sensor is secured against rotation via the case, allowing the front of the sensor to be adapted in situ to the mold cavity. A supplied sleeve protects the sensor from deformation or other damage.

Recommended accessories, sold separately, include the Type 1839 connector with quick connection capability for a single sensor; the Type 1708A connector, for the connection of up to four sensors; and the Type 1710A connector, for the connection of up to eight sensors.
