Solid State Shear Pulverization, which chills a co-rotating twin-screw extruder below the softening temperature of plastic rather than allowing it to melt, is finally commercial after more than 20 years of R&D. Zzyzx Polymers LLC, Allentown, PA, started up in January 2015 reportedly using the first commercial SSSP technology, according to a paper originally submitted to the Society of Plastics Engineers ANTEC 2016 conference, but not actually given. The ANTEC paper on “Commercialization of Solid-State Shear Pulverization: a Novel Polymer Processing Technology,” by Philip Brunner (co-founder of Zzyzx), Mark Tapsak, and Mike Janse, says the process has been successfully scaled up to pilot plant size for the first time.

In-line production of polymer specimen
The SpeciMold produces polymer specimen in a single step in-line, not needing several process steps as conventional production procedures require. Thus, the specimen producer saves your time and is gentle to the used material, as it is only melted once in the process. The specimen have exactly the same properties and characteristics as the extrusion polymer and are, therefore, perfectly suited for further mechanical property tests. Stay flexible and use the SpeciMold the way you need it. For it is compatible with Brabender single and twin screw extruders as well as with third-party extruders, the injection molding parameters are easy editable and the injection molds can be changed quickly, giving you a great amount of possible specimen.
