Floreon, R&D/Leverage Bring PLA to Injection Stretch Blow Molding

Floreon PLA bottle British bioplastics firm Floreon-Transforming Packaging Ltd. says it has developed a compound that when added to polylactic acid (PLA) makes it much tougher and less brittle. The Hull, England-based firm worked via a "knowledge transfer partnership" with the UK's University of Sheffield for four years to bring this concept to fruition, according to Floreon Technical Director Dr. Andrew Gill. Nissei Launches Plant to Build Injection Presses in the U.S.

Nissei plant rendering Japan's Nissei Plastic Industrial Co., Ltd. recently began construction of a $20 million, 114,000-square-foot plant in San Antonio, Texas, to build injection molding machines for the U.S. domestic market. It says that factory construction should be done by November, and it plans to begin shipping presses by February 2018. Read More

Tekni-Plex Unit Rolls Out Medical-Grade TPE Compounds

Tekni-Plex TPE Colorite, the custom compounding arm of Wayne, Pa.-based Tekni-Plex Inc., is launching a new line of thermoplastic elastomer compounds for medical device applications at the MD&M West trade show in Anaheim, Calif., early this month. These TPE compounds – named Cellene™ – are said to be suitable for a wide variety of uses in medical devices, packaging and other regulated markets. Read More

Quadrant CMS, Oystershell Create Pen-style Wart Remover

Pixie pen A pair of Belgian firms – pharmaceutical company Oystershell Laboratories and molder Quadrant Creative Moulding & Systems (Quadrant CMS) – have collaborated to develop and commercialize a disposable liquefied-gas dispensing pen for removing warts. Called the Pixie pen, the product doses small amounts of nitrous oxide onto the skin from a pressurized container, which is automatically assembled from 14 components. Of those, Quadrant CMS injection molds six plastic components using five different engineering plastics, including acetal, polycarbonate, nylon, PMMA and SAN. Read More

'Exjection' Molding Comes into Its Own

PE Blog At least two commercial technologies combine extrusion with injection molding to fill molds with much lower pressure than conventional injection molding. One was recently introduced by Extrude to Fill LLC, Loveland, CO (, which melts plastic electrically without turning the screw. The other was introduced nearly 10 years ago by IB Steiner, a plastics engineering firm in Spielberg, Austria (, called Exjection, which uses a sliding mold cavity. Read More
